The UK is the first country to map and estimate the blue carbon stored in its seabed habitats. The Wildlife Trusts, WWF-UK and RSPB have released a new report sharing the groundbreaking research, conducted on their behalf by the Scottish Association of Marine Science. As a result of the research, the three environmental charities are calling for action to protect the important marine habitats including saltmarsh, kelp forests, biogenic reefs and mud that lock up these carbon stores.

The Wildlife Trusts are restoring woodlands and peat lands to sequester carbon, enhance biodiversity, and reduce emissions. These projects also offer flood and drought mitigation, public health improvements, increased access to nature, new jobs, and volunteer opportunities.

Our soils are a precious resource. They're the foundation of our ability to grow food and home to more than 25% of all biodiversity of earth! Land management and land use planning decisions must allow soils to regenerate.

The Carbon Landscape encompasses the wetlands of Wigan, the mosslands in Salford and Warrington and the Mersey Wetlands corridor stretching from Rixton to the Manchester Ship Canal, including the Woolston Eyes Site of Special Scientific Interest in Warrington.
