The Wildlife Trusts respond to independent Government review into farm profitability

Today, an independent review into farm profitability, led by Baroness Minette Batters, has been published.

The Farming Profitability Review 2025 sets out recommendations to strengthen the resilience and viability of farm businesses.

The evidence is clear that nature underpins our ability to produce food and plays a critical role in future proofing farm businesses, not least from the impacts of climate change. With over 70% of the UK’s land farmed in some way, agricultural policy must fairly support farmers in their transition to more nature-friendly and climate resilient farming. Only then can we recover nature and have profitable farm businesses fit for the future.

Vicki Hird, strategic lead for agriculture at The Wildlife Trusts, says:

“This review of profitability comes at a key time when farmers are facing a range of pressures, including unpredictable climate change impacts, ever lower prices, higher costs and demands for environmental actions. But restoring nature across the farmed landscape is not just a nice to have, it’s a critical part of future proofing farm businesses and underpins farmers’ ability to produce food.

“From pollinating our crops to helping to tackle climate change, our natural systems provide a whole range of public goods, and we must value this far more fairly at the farm gate and in new nature investments, as the review suggests. The Government must urgently get the environmental land management schemes back on track so that they support farmers to build more resilient, nature-friendly businesses which are fit for the future.

“An accelerated transition to this approach, with an increased and protected multiannual budget, plus far more independent advice and guidance, is crucial. It’s high time we recognised the vast range of important benefits farmers provide society with - from skylarks to spring onions and soil health to sourdough."

Earlier this year, The Wildlife Trusts published their vision for the future of food and farming - Food & Farming in the Nature & Climate Crises. Providing a ‘blueprint for delivering healthy diets, nature recovery and climate-resilient farm and food businesses long into the future’, the Trusts stress that the time is now to get the farming transition back on track.
