Connecting Limbs: Sheffield & Rotherham Wildlife Trust
This ambitious catchment-scale project will restore ecosystems across the entire River Sheaf, from its headwaters in the Peak District to the heart of urban Sheffield. Building on the success of the award-nominated Limb Brook Living River demonstrator, it combines natural flood management measures such as leaky dams and attenuation ponds with innovative urban eco-engineering that creates habitats within modified river channels.
The project will also work closely with local communities to reconnect people with their rivers as thriving social and ecological spaces. With a project area covering more than 500 hectares, it aims to reduce flood risk for 872 properties while delivering significant biodiversity, climate resilience and well-being benefits.
Rivers 2040
A Rivers 2040 project is a place-based freshwater restoration initiative that contributes to the long-term recovery of river catchments through nature-based solutions. Projects can range from restoring floodplains and wetlands, improving water quality, reconnecting rivers to their natural processes, creating habitat for wildlife, reducing pollution, increasing access to nature, or helping communities become more resilient to flooding and drought.
Rivers 2040 aims to bring together multiple environmental, social and economic benefits at a catchment scale, demonstrating how investment in nature can support healthier rivers, thriving wildlife, resilient communities and sustainable economic growth.
Project readiness
