Located on the eastern edge of the Peak District, close to the Chatsworth Estate, Bar Brook flows from the moorlands of Totley Moss and Big Moor before joining the River Derwent at Baslow and ultimately contributing to the River Trent catchment. Set within a landscape of open moorland and internationally important upland habitats, the project represents the first stage of a longer-term catchment restoration programme being developed with partners.

The development phase will establish the evidence base and investment case needed to move towards pilot delivery. The project will combine remote sensing and ground-truthed surveys to assess current conditions, alongside detailed design work to understand restoration opportunities and their potential impacts. Modelling will quantify outcomes including water storage benefits, carbon sequestration and biodiversity gains, creating a robust business case for future investment and the next stage of catchment-scale restoration.

Rivers 2040

A Rivers 2040 project is a place-based freshwater restoration initiative that contributes to the long-term recovery of river catchments through nature-based solutions. Projects can range from restoring floodplains and wetlands, improving water quality, reconnecting rivers to their natural processes, creating habitat for wildlife, reducing pollution, increasing access to nature, or helping communities become more resilient to flooding and drought.

Rivers 2040 aims to bring together multiple environmental, social and economic benefits at a catchment scale, demonstrating how investment in nature can support healthier rivers, thriving wildlife, resilient communities and sustainable economic growth.
