Return of the hedgehogs

Can you find the hedgehogs hidden in Surrey?

We all love hedgehogs, but climate change, habitat loss and pollution are all big threats to the species, and unless we act, hedgehogs could eventually go extinct.

That's why The Climate Coalition is working in collaboration with The Wildlife Trusts, National Trust, Woodland Trust, CPRE Surrey and Surrey WI to draw attention to this prickly fact.

We've teamed up with the people of Epsom and Ewell to place 50 locally crafted hedgehog sculptures around the borough. They'll be out and about from Friday 25th - Sunday 27th March, before scurrying over to Epsom Library between 28th March and 1st April.

We've made a map to help you to find every one - and we'd love you to share photos of any you find on social media using #ReturnOfTheHedgehogs.

Where are the hedgehogs?

You can find the 50 hedgehogs between 25th-27th March! We're updating the map with all the locations at the moment and you can download a version of the map to take away, here

Did you know? A group of hedgehogs is called an array

With each hedgehog  you find, you’ll discover a practical tip on how to help them, from creating ‘wildlife corridors’ in your garden to cutting a hedgehog-sized hole in your gate. Why not try one of these tips at home?

Did you know, as well as making changes in your garden, you can create a better world for hedgehogs through the choices you make in your home? By doing small things to reduce the amount of energy we use, we can play a part in combating climate change. This reduces the impact on the breeding and hibernation patterns of our little spiky friends due to warming temperatures.

Everything we do at home and abroad to tackle climate change helps hedgehogs and protects our great British countryside for generations to come.

We've a FREE 16 page booklet that tells you all about hedgehogs and how you can welcome them into your garden.

How to create a hedgehog hole

Cut a 13 x 13cm hole in your fence so hedgehogs can roam freely between gardens (they like to adventure at night in search of food and mates!).

Our handy activity sheet explains everything you need to do this. Make sure to speak to your neighbour beforehand if you share a boundary.
