Rugeley Riverside: Staffordshire Wildlife Trust
Rugeley Riverside is transforming 64 acres of former industrial land beside the River Trent into a thriving wetland landscape for wildlife. Once a golf course associated with the former Rugeley Power Station, the site closed in 2017 and has since been acquired by Staffordshire Wildlife Trust to create a new nature-rich destination along the Trent corridor.
The project is restoring the land for nature through the creation of wetland habitats that will support wildlife recovery, improve ecological connectivity and strengthen the resilience of the wider river corridor. As restoration progresses, the site will demonstrate how former industrial land can be repurposed to deliver long-term environmental benefits, creating a wetland haven for wildlife in the heart of the Trent catchment.
Rivers 2040
A Rivers 2040 project is a place-based freshwater restoration initiative that contributes to the long-term recovery of river catchments through nature-based solutions. Projects can range from restoring floodplains and wetlands, improving water quality, reconnecting rivers to their natural processes, creating habitat for wildlife, reducing pollution, increasing access to nature, or helping communities become more resilient to flooding and drought.
Rivers 2040 aims to bring together multiple environmental, social and economic benefits at a catchment scale, demonstrating how investment in nature can support healthier rivers, thriving wildlife, resilient communities and sustainable economic growth.
