Your guide to outdoor fun: Top tips from the Countryside Code

Clare Webb from the Countryside Code team at Natural England shares some top tips from the Code including some fun activities that you can help you prepare for your adventures.

Whenever people and nature meet, the Countryside Code should be used to help us all have safe and fun experiences in the outdoors.

Before you set out on your #30dayswild adventures why not brush up on the Countryside Code so we can all enjoy green spaces while also protecting them!

The key messages from the Code are:

Respect everyone

  • be considerate to those living in, working in and enjoying the countryside
  • leave gates and property as you find them
  • do not block access to gateways or driveways when parking
  • be nice, say hello, share the space
  • follow local signs and keep to marked paths unless wider access is available

Protect the environment

  • take your litter home - leave no trace of your visit
  • do not light fires and only have BBQs where signs say you can
  • always keep dogs under control and in sight
  • dog poo - bag it and bin it in any public waste bin or take it home
  • care for nature - do not cause damage or disturbance

  • enjoy your visit, have fun, make a memory

How to get started

A great way to prepare for your 30 Days Wild adventure is to look at the activities that have been developed with the Countryside Code!

A particular favourite of mine is the Pawprint Family's 'Signs and Symbols' activity - it will help you to learn your yellow waymarker from your red, or knowing where you can go on a bike!
