When I think about the importance of inclusivity, I reflect on how it makes the difference between feeling accepted or feeling lost.
Inclusivity makes the difference between feeling accepted, or feeling lost

I grew up moving between different countries every 2-4 years, so my sense of belonging was never shaped by a specific location, but by the people around me in each new place. I have been in environments where I’ve been ignored, forgotten about, or intentionally excluded from participating. These experiences left me feeling invisible and alienated.
Conversely, I found people who were welcoming and empathetic. In these spaces I developed real connections, new interests, and the confidence to be myself. I learnt that being truly inclusive went beyond tolerance. Inclusivity is about creating a supportive environment where everyone can be authentically themselves.
Inclusivity and diversity are important elements of The Wildlife Trusts’ work because people are integral to the mission of restoring nature. By ensuring the work we do best reflects the communities served, we can break down barriers and create opportunities for everyone to access nature.
Environments where we feel safe, welcome, and accepted can bring out the best of us, and people are more likely to champion nature if they see themselves reflected in our work.
The theme for this year’s National Inclusion Week, ‘Now is the Time’, is a fantastic reminder that inclusivity should be embraced and championed. I am a huge advocate for inclusive spaces and workplaces because I’ve experienced the power of inclusivity firsthand. As The Wildlife Trusts’ Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) lead Trustee, I support Council by ensuring equality, diversity and inclusion are discussed and represented on the agenda. While this is my focus, I’m far from being the only advocate. There is a genuine commitment from everyone to put equality, diversity and inclusion at the core of The Wildlife Trusts’ policies and initiatives.
To me, inclusivity matters because it allows everyone the freedom to flourish, collaborate, and be seen. Whether you’re influencing national policy or simply treating one another with respect and compassion, we all play a meaningful role in creating a culture of belonging.
National Inclusion Week is dedicated to celebrating inclusion and taking action to build inclusive workplaces. “Now is the Time” has been chosen as the theme due to the urgency and importance of inclusion, influenced by the recent backlash against inclusion and diversity.
