Young people across the UK will be put in the driving seat of improving their local environment, as 31 projects are set to kick off under Big Lottery Fund’s new Our Bright Future programme.
Our Bright Future is a forward-thinking social movement that supports young people to lead progressive change in their communities and local environment. Through a portfolio of 31 projects across the UK, we are helping young people step up and take what is rightfully theirs: a healthy planet, a thriving economy, a brighter future.
The quality of our built and natural environments are benefiting from significant change. As a result, our communities are gaining a wealth of benefits from improved local places and our people are benefiting from developing knowledge and confidence that will help them into further education and employment.
But this programme goes a lot further than the impact seen by the individual projects. Collectively we are gathering strong evidence about the development of the environment and young people. In particular, we are looking at the importance of addressing both issues together through growing our green economy. We are confident that this evidence will soon start to guide economic choices made at local, regional, and national levels in the UK.
This generation’s time is coming, and we can’t wait to see what happens next.

Our Bright Future is run by a consortium of eight organisations which is led by The Wildlife Trusts. Collectively we have more than 40 years of combined experience in managing social and environmental grant programmes totalling nearly £300 million, and proven successes working with and empowering young people. Our varied partner organisations are the Centre for Sustainable Energy, The Conservation Volunteers, Field Studies Council, the Plunkett Foundation, vInspired, Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust and UpRising. Each of the 31 projects in the Our Bright Future portfolio is managed and run by different specialist agencies or organisations.
The programme is funded by the Big Lottery Fund which supports the aspirations of people who want to make life better for their communities across the UK. The Big Lottery Fund is responsible for giving out 40% of the money raised by the National Lottery and investing more than £650 million a year into projects in health, education, environment and charitable purposes.
