The discovery of a corn buttercup at Pimhill Farm, Shropshire, last week has amazed and delighted the county's botanists. It is 50 years since it was last recorded in the county and was believed to be extinct.
Cumbria hosts UK's first reintroduction of white-faced darter dragonfly

Cumbria Wildlife Trust is reintroducing the rare white-faced darter dragonfly onto Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve, near Witherslack, in south Cumbria. This is the first attempt to reintroduce the white-faced darter dragonfly anywhere in the UK and it is being funded by Natural England.
First flight for protected peregrine chicks

Three of the four peregrine falcon chicks nesting at the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve and Visitor Centre took to the skies for the first time over the weekend (w/e 25 June) marking another successful year for Operation Peregrine, the round-the-clock protection watch manned by expert Trust staff and local volunteers passionate about wildlife.

The Wildlife Trusts have welcomed the announcement from Decentralisation Minister, Greg Clark MP, that the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) has been disbanded. It was a body made up of unelected people who could fast-track major projects such as ports and power stations and had no ecological expertise.

Pint-sized butterfly beats extinction in Hertfordshire

Britain's tiniest butterfly, the small blue, has made big news by returning to Hertfordshire after being extinct in the county for eight years. This dinky delight, which is barely bigger than a five pence piece, was spotted at Aldbury Nowers Nature Reserve near Tring recently, where Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust (HMWT) have been carefully managing the habitat to encourage butterflies to thrive.

Fears are mounting across the globe for the future survival of the UK’s oldest breeding female osprey, which astounded wildlife experts when it returned to the Scottish Wildlife Trust’s Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Reserve for the 20th consecutive year this March.
