Local Living Landscapes

Living Landscapes are the areas where The Wildlife Trusts are targeting landscape-scale conservation efforts to halt the decline of wildlife and restore the natural environment.


Generally, our Living Landscape work:

Focuses on landscapes or large areas, rather than individual habitat patches
Employs a multi-disciplinary approach (e.g. habitat creation and restoration, provision of landowner advice)
Is carried out in partnership with a range of other organisations and local communities
Delivers environmental benefits for people, such as health benefits, skills training and green tourism, as well as improving conditions for wildlife

Scotland

Coigach and Assynt (Scottish Wildlife Trust) - one of the biggest conservation restoration projects ever attempted in the UK

Cumbernauld Greenspaces (Scottish Widlife Trust) - providing a haven for wildlife and an important recreational space for local people in the heart of Cumbernauld

Isle of Eigg Living Landscape (Scotish Wildlife Trust) - Scottish Wildlife Trust is a member of the Isle of Eigg Heritage Trust, which manages much of the island as a sustainable Living Landscape

Wales

Anglesey Wetlands (North Wales Wildlife Trust) - A large-scale 500 hectare scheme for the restoration and enhancement of key sites within the Anglesey Fens (North Wales Wildlife Trust)

Pumlumon (Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust and Wildlife Trust Wales) - Changing the way we manage the countryside in the uplands to restore nature and give local communities a better future

Gwent Levels (Gwent Wildlife Trust) Restoring one of the largest surviving areas of ancient grazing marshes and reen (drainage ditch) systems in Britain

 Cwm Marteg (Radnorshire Wildlife Trust) This scheme will enhance the biodiversity, and stimulate the economy, of the Marteg valley

Usk to Wye (Gwent Wildlife Trust) - Creating a wildlife-rich patchwork of interconnected meadows and ancient woodland

Welsh Wye Project (Brecknock and Radnorshire Wildlife Trusts) - Linking and enhancing wildlife habitats around Llangorse Lake and the breathtaking scenery of the Wye Valley

Upper Tawe Valley (Brecknock Wildlife Trust) - Linking and enhancing wildlife habitats along the valley to enable the rare marsh fritillary butterfly to colonise its former range
 

Northern Ireland

Belfast Hills Living Landscape - Slievenacloy (Ulster Wildlife Trust) - Working with a range of stakeholders to link up protected sites in the Belfast Hills and improve public access

Umbra-Magilligan Sand Dune System (Ulster Wildlife Trust) - Allowing the Umbra to provide the nucleus for species to re-colonise the rest of the Magilligansand dune system
 

England

North East (inc Yorkshire)

Cassop to Kelloe Corridor (Durham Wildlife Trust) - Reconnecting fragmented grasslands and providing an amenity for local communities and visitors

Coal and Coast  (Northumberland Wildlife Trust) - Developing a series of interconnected wildlife areas in and around Druridge Bay and the farmland of south east Northumberland

East Cleveland Living Landscape (Tees Valley Wildlife Trust) - Focusing on the steep, wooded valleys that stretch from the Moors to the North Sea, to create wildlife corridors and networks

Hadrian’s Wall and Whin Sill Corridor (Northumberland Wildlife Trust) - Restoring grasslands found along Hadrian’s Wall and the rocky outcrops of the Whin Sill

Humberhead Levels (Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trusts) - Twelve organisations working together to keep the Humberhead Levels special

Kielder Forest and Border Mires (Northumberland Wildlife Trust) - This scheme will develop a large, connected Living Landscape of boglands and forest

MAGical Coast (Durham Wildlife Trust) - A lifesaving plan to safeguard the important wildlife of, and attract visitors to, the 'magnesium limestone' Durham coast

Outer Humber (Yorkshire Wildlife Trust) - Aiming to link Hull to Spurn through a series of coastal project centres

River Hull Living Landscape (Yorkshire Wildlife Trust) - Restoring, enhancing and creating new wetland habitats throughout the river valley

River Ure Living Landscape (Yorkshire Wildlife Trust) - Working with the minerals industry to develop wetland creation schemes and establish a network of wetland habitats

The Aire and Calder Valleys (Yorkshire Wildlife Trust) - Working with partners to enhance the area's biodiversity and recreational opportunities for local people

The Living Don (Sheffield Wildlife Trust) - Creating a network of natural green spaces from the high Moors of the Peak District to the floodplain of the Lower Don Valley

Prestwick Carr (Northumberland Wildlife Trust) - Creating an interconnected chain of wildlife habitats to the north of Newcastle

Tees Valley (Tees Valley Wildlife Trust) - Creating a connected chain of wildlife habitats and natural spaces along the Tees Valley

Brockholes Living Landscape (The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside) - Uniting a stunning natural environment with first-class facilities to attract and impress visitors from across the North of England

Gowy and Mersey Washlands (Cheshire Wildlife Trust) - Landscape-scale wetland creation with local landowners – restoring, recreating and reconnecting the floodplain

Great Manchester Wetlands  (The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester and North Merseyside; Cheshire Wildlife Trust) - An ambitious scheme focusing on the wetlands of Wigan and the mosslands of Chat Moss and Risley Moss Mosslands

Lakeland Living Landscape (Cumbria Wildlife Trust) Working with landowners and local communities, this scheme aims to protect, restore and reconnect upland habitats in the Lake District

Meres And Mosses (Shropshire, Cheshire and Staffordshire Wildlife Trusts) - Restoring the fragmented wetlands of the Meres and Mosses for both the wildlife and people that live there

Morecambe Bay Living Landscape (Lancashire & Cumbria Wildlife Trusts) - Re-connecting woodlands, flower-rich grasslands, limestone pavements, bogs and coastline

Mosslands Living Landscape (The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester & North Merseyside) - Protecting the fragments of mossland that remain and creating mossland corridors to link isolated sites

Solway Wetlands (Cumbria Wildlife Trust) - Creating a patchwork of restored wetland sites that will link lowland raised bogs and provide habitat corridors for wildlife

Wigan Flashes Wetland Restoration (The Wildlife Trust for Lancashire, Manchester & North Merseyside) - Restoring the legacy of Wigan's industrial past to create a network of important wetland habitats

Charnwood Forest Living Landscape (Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust) -Working with partners to reconnect habitats in Leicestershire's most important area for wildlife.

Idle Valley (Notts Wildlife Trust) - Focuses on the Sutton and Lound Gravel Pits SSSI and 140 hectares of surrounding land

Kirkby Moor and Bain Valley (Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust) - Creating an extensive areas of new wildlife habitat including wet woodland, heathland and acid grassland

Linacre and northern Peak Fringe including Chesterfield (Derbyshire Wildlife Trust) - Identifying the best examples of ancient pastures and meadows in the area and providing advice and support to landowners

Lincolnshire Limewoods (Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust) - Protecting, enhancing and promoting one of the largest areas of small-leaved lime woodland in the British landscape

Lincolnshire Wolds (Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust) - Britain's largest hunt for roadside wildflowers. This scheme aims to identify and protect wildflower corrdiors throughout the Wolds

Lincolnshire’s Coastal Grazing Marsh (Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust) - Restoring up to 9,000 hectares of land along the Lincolnshire coast to recreate areas of grazing marsh and arable land

Lower Derwent Valley (Derbyshire Wildlife Trust) - Safeguarding and restoring the Lower Derwent Valley - a World Heritage Site for its role in the Industrial Revolution

South Lincolnshire Fenlands (Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust) - Creating a new, large fenland landscape for people and wildlife in southern Lincolnshire

South Lincolnshire Limestone (Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust) - Protecting, enhancing and reconnecting some of the richest grasslands in the country 

Sherwood Forest Heathlands (Notts Wildlife Trust) - Reconnecting and enhancing Sherwood’s ancient heathlands

Soar and Wreake Floodplain (Leicestershire & Rutland Wildlife Trust) - Creating and linking wildlife habitats along the Soar and Wreake floodplain

Trent Holmes Living Landscape (Notts Wildlife Trust) - Working with landowners to secure large scale sympathetic management of the floodplain and restoring wetland habitats

Trent Valley Living Landscape (Derbyshire Wildlife Trust) - Restoring a wildlife corridor along the whole of the Derbyshire Trent Valley floodplain

Birmingham and Black Country Living Landscape (Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trust) - Transforming accessible natural greenspace and local Nature Reserves in partnership with local people and communities

Bredon Hill Living Landscape (Worcestershire Wildlife Trust) - Working with local landowners to protect, enhance and re-create habitats in the Bredon Hill area

Central Rivers Initiative (Staffordshire Wildlife Trust) - Revitalising and restoring the river valley from former quarries to beautiful places, teeming with wildlife.

Churnet Valley (Staffordshire Wildlife Trust) - A major partnership project to conserve, enhance and celebrate the landscape of the Staffordshire moorlands

Forest of Arden (Warwickshire Wildlife Trust) -Reconnecting the historic Forest of Arden landscape - the only area of ancient countryside in Warwickshire

Forest of Feckenham (Worcestershire Wildlife Trust) Restoring a rich mosaic of ancient woodlands, old pastures and hay meadows, hedgerows and wetlands

Woolhope Dome Living Landscape (Herefordshire Wildlife Trust) - Working with key partners, farmers, and smallholders to help maintain and restore important habitats in the Woolhope Dome area

Wyre Forest Heaths (Worcestershire Wildlife Trust) - Restoring and conserving existing heathland sites in the Wyre Forest, and creating new habitat on adjacent land 

Tame Valley Wetlands (Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Birmingham & Black Country Wildlife Trusts) - Working with partners to create a wetland landscape rich in wildlife and accessible to all, throughout the Tame Valley

Telford and the Wrekin Forest (Shropshire Wildlife Trust) - Bringing together communities, landowners and land managers to protect this precious greenspace

The Severn Wye Living Landscape (Shropshire, Montgomery, Brecknock, Radnor, Gwent, Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Avon Wildlife Trusts) - Restoring the wetlands of the Severn Vale to their former glory, creating a 50-kilometre wetland wildlife highway

The Stiperstones - Back to Purple and Beyond (Shropshire Wildlife Trust) - Removing planted conifers and restoring the natural vegetation of heather and bilberry along a six-mile ridge of heathland

The OnTrent Initiative (Notts, Lincs, Derbys and Staffs Wildlife Trusts) - Conserving and enhancing the rich natural and historic heritage along the River Trent

Rhos Fiddle & Clun Forest (Shropshire Wildlife Trust) - Surveying and recording areas of significant wildlife habitat and mapping the ecological corridors which connect them

Princethorpe Woodlands (Warwickshire Wildlife Trust) - Reconnecting ancient woodlands through sympathetic land management, hedgerow restoration and woodland creation

Oswestry Hills (Shropshire Wildlife Trust) - Linking together limestone grassland sites in the Oswestry Hills to establish an ecolgical network across the area

Staffordshire Washlands (Staffordshire Wildlife Trust) - Demonstrating how farmed landscape can be viably managed to reduce flood risk downstream

Sowe Valley Project (Warwickshire Wildlife Trust) - Linking nature reserves along the River Sowe and providing health, recreation and training opportunities for local people

Severn and Avon Vales (Worcestershire Wildlife Trust) - Creating a sustainable wetland environment within this valuable landscape, much of which is intensively farmed

East of England

Blyth-Alde Living Landscape (Suffolk Wildlife Trust) - Working with partners to create a large sustainable natural landscape on the Suffolk coast benefitting both people and wildlife

Bure Valley Living Landscape (Norfolk Wildlife Trust) - Enhancing and reconnecting wetland habitats and providing facilities for people to enjoy the area's wildlife

Blackwater Estuary (Essex Wildlife Trust) -Delivering a range of benefits including coastal realignment and habitat creation and improving public access

Cambridgeshire Chalk (The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire) - Creating an interconnected network of species-rich chalk grassland

Gaywood Valley (Norfolk Wildlife Trust) - Restoring a 4,000-hectare landscape of heathland and mire of international conservation importance

Hadleigh and Daws Heath Complex (Essex Wildlife Trust) - Enhancing a historic landscape of ancient woodland and lowland grassland in Essex

Hanningfield Reservoir and Woods (Essex Wildlife Trust) -The second largest reservoir in Essex, Hanningfield is a focus for conservation work by Essex Wildlife Trust

Hickling Living Landscape (Norfolk Wildlife Trust) - Working in the Upper Thurne river catchment to restore wetland habitats

The Naze (Essex Wildlife Trust) - Managing and enhancing habitats on this unique coastal habitat to maximise their value to wildlife and people

The Nene Valley (The Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire) - Enhancing and reconnecting a chain of 12 wetland reserves along the Nene valley

West Cambridgeshire Hundreds (The Wildlife Trust of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire) - Restoring, creating and re-connecting wildlife habitat to create a woodland habitat network and improve access for people.

Northamptonshire Limestone and John Clare Country (The Wildlife Trust of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire) - Creating a network of woodland, grassland and wetland habitats and interpreting the historical value of the area for local people.

North Chilterns Chalk (The Wildlife Trust of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire) - Creating a landscape which is rich in wildlife and provides recreational opportunities for local people.

North Norfolk Woods (Norfolk Wildlife Trust) - Reconnecting habitats by enhancing and creating woodland, grassland, hedgerows and encouraging wildlife-friendly farming

Northamptonshire Limestone and John Clare Country (The Wildlife Trust of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire) - Creating a network of woodland, grassland and wetland habitats and interpreting the historical value of the area for local people

Ouse Valley (The Wildlife Trust of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire) - Creating a network of species-rich flood meadows, floodplain grazing marsh and wet woodland alongside the Ouse Valley

The Great Fen (The Wildlife Trust of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire)

 

Roman River Complex and Abberton Reservoir (Essex Wildlife Trust) - This scheme will link the Roman River to Abberton Reservoir, creating a Living Landscape which is resilient and sustainable

 

Sandlings Heaths and Forests (Suffolk Wildlife Trust) - Reconnecting fragmented sites on a landscape scale to create the largest unbroken tract of heathland in Suffolk

Stour Valley Woodlands (Suffolk Wildlife Trust) - Increasing connectivity between fragmented patches of semi-natural woodland habitat

Suffolk Broads (Suffolk Wildlife Trust) - Working with local landowners to reconnect, expand and buffer wildlife-rich wetlands

Thurrock Thameside Nature Park (Essex Wildlife Trust) - Transforming Mucking landfill site and the surrounding area into a high-quality landscape and heritage setting

Wissey Living Landscape (Norfolk Wildlife Trust) - Working with the Environment Agency on an exciting project to re-wet the Fens

Crane Valley Living Landscape (London Wildlife Trust) - An exciting scheme to breathe life into a neglected river which is rich in history and a precious home for wildlife

Lewes and Ouse Valley (Sussex Wildlife Trust) - Celebrating wildlife and wild habitats from the top of the downs to the depths of the Ouse

Loddon and Eversley Heritage Area (Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust) - Protecting and restoring habitats, landscapes, wildlife populations and heritage assets in the Loddon & Eversley Heritage Area

London's Gardens (London Wildlife Trust) - Raising people’s awareness of the value of gardens for wildlife and climate change and protecting gardens from the threat of inappropriate development

Medway Smile (Kent Wildlife Trust) - Working with landowners to enhance and reconnect a range of habitats and countryside around the 'smile' - south of Medway

Romney Marshes Living Landscape (Kent & Sussex Wildlife Trusts) - Romney Marshes offers enormous potential for large-scale enhancement, restoration and re-creation of wetland habitats

North East Hampshire Grazing For Wildlife Project (Hampshire and Isle of wight Wildlife Trust) - Working with the Ministry of Defence to restore a huge area of heathland and grassland in north and east Hampshire

West Weald - (Sussex & Surrey Wildlife Trusts) - Conserving and enhancing 24,000 hectares of one of the most wooded parts of the UK

Darent Triangle (Kent Wildlife Trust) - Restoring chalk grassland on a landscape scale using a self-sustaining livestock grazing programme

Lower Stour Wetlands (Kent Wildlife Trust) - Restoring some of Kent’s most extensive wetland habitats

Sevenoaks Living Landscape (Kent Wildlife Trust) - Working with a range of public and private landowners to enhance, extend and link existing wildlife habitats

The Blean Complex (Kent Wildlife Trust) - Expanding and reconnecting woodland habitats in the largest tract of semi-natural woodland in England

Roydon Woods & Lymington Valley (Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust) - This scheme will bring 2,000 hectares of the Lymington Valley landscape into good environmental management

Wandle Valley Living Landscape (London Wildlife Trust) - Restoring six kilometres of urban river habitat along the River Wandle

Ray Valley Restoration (Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust) - Restoring more than 7,000 hectares of the River Ray, creating a naturally functioning wetland landscape over the next 30 years

Upper Thames Living Landscape (Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust) - Working to manage, restore and recreate the lost and charismatic habitats of the upper Thames

West Berkshire Living Landscape (Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust) - Protecting, expanding and enhancing a range of different habitats around historic Greenham Common

Surrey Wildlife Trust Grazing Project (Surrey Wildlife Trust) - Working with the Ministry of Defence and Surrey County Council to restore heathland and chalk grasland at a landscape scale

Stort Valley (Hertfordshire & Middlesex Wildlife Trust) - Restoring and linking habitats along the Stort valley to secure long-term protection and improve access for people

Avon's Wildflower Grasslands (Avon Wildlife Trust) - Targeting conservation work in areas that are known to contain outstanding wildlife-rich grasslands. The Trust is working with local landowners to protect, expand and reconnect these areas

Brue Valley Living Landscape (Somerset Wildlife Trust) - Restoring and recreating areas of wetland habitats with links to local farming and food production
 

Exeter Wild City (Devon Wildlife Trust) - Creating opportunities for wildlife to flourish in a network of green spaces around Exeter

Mendip Hills Living Landscape (Somerset Wildlife Trust) - Working in partnership to restore, link and re-create wildlife habitats across the Mendips

New Life For Chalk Grassland (Wiltshire Wildlife Trust) - This scheme is restoring chalk grassland by reintroducing grazing and reseeding areas between sites to create corridors

North Somerset Wetland Programme (Avon Wildlife Trust) - Protecting and restoring an extensive area of coastal and floodplain grazing marsh close to Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare

Pastures New (Dorset Wildlife Trust) - A large-scale grassland restoration project for landowners and farmers in Dorset

Waves Of Heath (Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust) - Protecting the wildlife, landscape and archaeological sites of the Isles of Scilly

Wild Penwith (Cornwall Wildlife Trust) - Improving habitat connectivity, water quality and farm businesses in the far south west of England
