The Reserves Officer is responsible for the management of Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve in south west Hampshire - a major flagship reserve. It has SSSI, SPA and SAC status and attracts 25,000 visitors annually. The diverse range of habitats can be accessed by seven kilometres of surfaced paths and six observation hides.
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is the leading nature conservation charity in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight. The Trust seeks to increase people’s involvement in their local environment and in turn create better conditions for wildlife on land and in the sea.
With a budget of up to £100,000, the Reserves Officer will manage visitors, volunteers and contractors, be responsible for habitat and estate management, and the production and implementation of management plans and reports. Habitat and species survey is an important part of the role, particularly wetland bird monitoring and survey. The post holder will work with local communities, liaise with private landowners and foster partnerships with statutory and non-statutory organisations.
Candidates will be experienced ornithologists, with relevant experience in managing high profile nature reserves with large numbers of visitors. Other essential skills and attributes include: practical habitat management and survey work, an understanding of wildlife conservation issues, mechanised hand tool certification, good communication skills, confidence in leading volunteer tasks and events, and a full driving licence.
