Reserves Officer Full-time (37.5 hours per week), permanent To maintain, safeguard and develop the Trusts’ reserves for wildlife and people, whilst promoting the Trust and its work to a wide audience.

JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE:   Reserves Officer

RESPONSIBLE TO:  Nature Reserves Manager

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Wardens, volunteers, contractors. Trainees and placement students from time to time.

WORK AREA: Hertfordshire, London Boroughs of Barnet, Enfield, Harrow and Hillingdon

GRADING:  Scale point 22 - 28


JOB PURPOSE

To maintain, safeguard and develop the Trusts’ reserves for wildlife and people, whilst promoting the Trust and its work to a wide audience.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
1. To undertake all duties in accordance with Health and Safety and other relevant legislation, as well as Trust policies, plans and procedures and recognised best practice.

2. To implement the approved management plans and annual work programmes for the Trusts’ reserves, for which this post holder is responsible.

3. To assist with the production of reserve management plans. To produce the annual work plans, working with the Nature Reserves Manager, the Volunteer Wardens and where relevant, external partners. 

4. To manage reserve Volunteer Wardens and other volunteers, assisting with recruitment, performance appraisal and development, including managing trainees for specific tasks.

5. To programme and manage work being undertaken on site by contractors, volunteers, Wardens, trainees and community groups. This will require the preparation of briefs, specifications and other contract documentation and ensuring compliance with all health and safety procedures. 

6. To undertake practical conservation work across a range of habitats.

7. To contribute to the preparation of the reserves’ budgets and to administer delegated budgets.

8. To participate in the development and implementation of the Trust’s Living Landscapes Projects.

9. To assist with sourcing, securing and managing grant aid, and the delivery of grant aided projects - ensuring compliance and preparing written and verbal reports as required.

10. To maintain all vehicles, machinery, equipment and tools in a safe and effective condition and to ensure that they are used in an appropriate manner.

11. To assist with the management of livestock belonging to the Trust or grazing on Trust reserves.

12. To deal with emergencies on, or misuse of, Trust reserves in a prompt and effective manner, where appropriate liaising with the emergency services.

13. To carry out all necessary safety inspections and undertake site and activity risk assessments.

14. To liaise day to day with neighbouring landowners/managers, partners, local authorities and other relevant bodies and to ensure effective partnership working through organising and/or contributing to reserve management committee meetings.

15. To contribute to the annual review of the Trust’s Development Plan and the formulation of policies and strategies for the Trusts reserves.

16. To promote the Trust and its work via the provision of guided walks, presentations, the preparation of interpretative materials and through participation in events and activities.

17. To deal with correspondence and enquiries from the general public, members and other interested parties in a timely, polite and effective manner.

18. To participate in relevant Nature Reserve seminars, groups and meetings, within the Wildlife Trusts, the counties and the region.

19. To carry out any other duties required by the Nature Reserves Manager, appropriate to the grade and nature of the post and to act for the Nature Reserves Manager, as required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

1. Education and Knowledge

Essential

• A formal qualification (degree or similar) in a biological/environmental science/countryside management.

• An understanding of wildlife, ecology and nature conservation.

• Knowledge of countryside/land management techniques and habitat and species management.

• Knowledge of health and safety legislation relevant to the post.

Desirable

• Qualifications in use of equipment and machinery such as chainsaws, brushcutters, ATVs etc and First Aid.


2. Experience

Essential

• Experience of practical habitat and species management work.

• Experience of working with contractors.

• Experience of managing volunteers, work parties etc.

• Experience of work planning, monitoring and reporting.

Desirable

• Experience of managing budgets.

• Experience of working with steering groups, user groups, management groups.

• Experience of conservation grazing and livestock management.

• Experience of leading guided walks, events etc

 
3. Skills

Essential

• The ability to initiate and develop land management projects.

• The ability to apply a good level of ecological understanding to practical management.

• The ability to work on his/her own initiative as well as working as a member of a close-knit team.

• Excellent communication skills – both written and oral.

• A reasonable level of computer literacy, including word-processing and spreadsheets.

• A full and valid driving licence.

Desirable

• Ability to undertake biological surveys.
