The eastern boundary of the East of Jones Bank recommended MCZ is 126km from the west of Land's End. This area also neighbours the recommended North-West of Jones Bank MCZ valued for its subtidal mud.

East of Jones Bank has a range of habitats. Rather than being a solid bedrock, loose cobbles here provide a diversity of surfaces for species to colonise and live within. Starfish especially make good use of these nooks and crannies. Areas of deep water rock also provide shelter from waves and currents.

Subtidal mud and sand habitats in this area provide suitable habitats for species to avoid predation or to ambush prey using their camouflage. This habitat is also perfect for burrowing species such as worms - a valuable food source for other marine species.

StatusThis recommended Marine Conservation Zone is ON HOLD at the moment as Defra has indicated that there is not enough evidence to support designation.

We need you to urge Defra to commit to gathering the additional information needed as soon as possible and consider this site as a high and urgent priority for designation in a future tranche:

Have your say

This site is on hold at the moment as Defra has indicated that there is not enough ecological evidence to support any of the species and habitats recommended for protection by stakeholders at the moment

If protected, this site would provide protection to important fish spawning and nursery areas. This site was also identified by Natural England and the Joint Nature Conservation Committee as being at risk of damage and deterioration due to pressure on the vulnerable habitats found within the site.

We need you to urge Defra to commit to gathering the additional information needed as soon as possible and consider this site as a high and urgent priority for designation in a future tranche. The site should be protected from damage and degradation in the meantime.
