Things you can do about climate change

When you take action to tackle climate change, you're improving the future for people and wildlife.

We know that thinking about what you can do about climate change can feel overwhelming. The good news is that lots of people across the UK are already taking action - from planting trees, to recycling and reusing, and speaking to their MP about why climate change and nature matters to them.

We've pulled together a short guide of some of the things you can do in your life to reduce your carbon footprint, get involved in community activities and adapt to climate change.

  3. Reduce, recycle and reuse

The best place to start is reducing what you buy. But there are also creative ways you can recycle and reuse things you already have. We’ve got a great guide for you.

  4. Reduce your water use

Ways to help in your community

  1. Find your local community recycle and reuse groups
Many local communities have Repair Cafes, Community Fridges, and clothes swap events. Initiatives like these help people to repair household items, reduce their food waste and refresh wardrobes without buying new clothes. They’re also a great way of meeting new people and sharing your own skills. If you live in London, you should also try the Library of Things rental service

  2. Join a community gardening group – or volunteer!
Lots of areas around the UK have community gardens that you can get involved with. Alternatively, why not sign up to volunteer for your local Wildlife Trust?

  3. Find a cycle club
Want to get out on your bike and leave the car at home, but aren’t sure where to get started? Have a look for a local cycle club! They can help you to build confidence and are a good way of making friends in your community. Community bike repair workshops are also popping up.

  4. Join a Neighbourhood Watch or litter picking group
Help your neighbourhood get cleaner and safer by joining your local group.

Switch to climate-friendly finances

Did you know that one of the best actions you can take for the climate crisis is to review where your money is held? Lots of banks fund fossil fuel companies and deforestation – using your money. By switching to a bank that funds green solutions instead, you’re putting your money where your beliefs are.

The same goes for your pension! On average, for every £10 put in a pension, £2 is linked to deforestation1. If you turn your pension fund green you will be having a big impact on climate change.
