Volunteers help give otters a home

Cornwall Wildlife Trust’s Wild Penwith Volunteers have spent an enjoyable day building an otter holt near Drift Reservoir, near Penzance. The holt has been created to help this magnificent animal as it increases its range throughout Cornwall.

As World Oceans Day is celebrated on 8th June, an advanced seabed map has become the first in the UK to be made freely available to the public, making it possible to see the sea floor in all its glory, including reefs, wrecks and rocky ledges. Showing not only the contours but, via linked photographs, many of the habitats of the seabed from Abbotsbury to Swanage, the DORset Integrated Seabed study (DORIS) map allows divers, conservationists and marine planners to see exactly what is located at the ocean floor, whether for recreational diving or for decision making about the use of Dorset’s marine sites.

Beavering away one year on

A year ago, on 29 May 2009, Scotland’s first wild beavers for over 400 years were released into Knapdale Forest, Mid-Argyll. This marked the start of the Scottish Beaver Trial, a five-year time-limited trial reintroduction and a partnership project between the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT), the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) and host Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS).
