New world record set!
Friday 26th November 2010
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is celebrating breaking the Guinness World Record for the 'World's Largest Bird Seed Cake'!
The record breaking attempt took place today (Friday 26 November) at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust’s headquarters in Botley, led by ninformation officer, Natalie Rogers. Under the watchful eyes of a team of adjudicators, Natalie project-managed the bird cake creation carried out by a team of willing staff and volunteers. The final weight was 1.37 tonnes, beating the existing record of 1.29 tonnes, held by Kent Wildlife Trust.
The aim was to make a birthday cake with donated flour (450kg), suet (750kg) and seeds (400kg), big enough to feed a significant proportion of Hampshire’s garden birds. In fact this giant cake measures some 2.9m x 1.5m x 0.4m.
Documentation of the event will now be sent to Guinness World Records and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust will be crowned the new world record-holders.
Natalie said: “This is a really exciting event and a world record attempt is a first for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. We have really enjoyed planning the event and have had a lot of support from local businesses. Most importantly, we hope that Hampshire's birds enjoy the bird seed cake and it encourages local people to find out more about the work we do.”
Chris Packham, attending the event in his capacity as Vice President of Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and Patron of the Trust’s 50th Anniversary said: “The effort and commitment that went into this world record was amazing. I want it to inspire people in Hampshire to support the Wildlife Trust and really enjoy the beautiful countryside in which we live. Most importantly we want even more youngsters to get involved as they will be the future custodians of our local wildlife."
To help the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust celebrate the new World Record and the launch of its 50th Anniversary Year, award-winning Hampshire brewer Bowmans was at the event with brand new ale Warbler (4.8% abv), brewed specially for the Wildlife Trust. Available on draft in pubs, in bottles in shops and in kegs for private parties right across Hampshire, for every pint sold Bowmans will make a donation to the Trust.
