King coming to Cumbria

Sunday 24th April 2011

Wildlife enthusiasts are encouraged to flock to Cumbria next month for the rare opportunity to spot household favourite Simon King in the flesh!

Wildlife cameraman and photographer Simon King OBE will be at The Rheged Centre on Sunday 8 May, revealing secrets of fieldcraft. An Audience with Simon King OBE is being held in support of Cumbria Wildlife Trust and The Wildlife Trusts. Simon’s hour-long talks start at 10.30am and 2.30pm.

Families who go along on the day will be able to join Cumbria Wildlife Trust on wildlife walks around Rheged Centre, through the woodland and down to the river. Katie Keighley, who is organising the walks, said:

The Wildlife Trusts’ nature reserves have a magic all of their own – unspoilt, truly wild and close to nature

“This is will be a great walk and we hope to see woodland birds, such as woodpeckers, and woodland plants, such as wild garlic. Otters have been spotted in the river so, if walkers are quiet and very lucky they might see one – or signs of them, at least! Our walk will be family-friendly =and we provide children walking with us with a spotter sheet so they can look out for wildlife as we head around the woodland.”

Other activities on the day include a digiscoping workshop, The Wildlife Whisperer Experience and Wildlife Photographer of the Year Exhibition. The Rheged Centre is one of a handful of venues displaying this prestigious collection of the world's most dramatic wildlife images outside of London. There is also a chance to win some fantastic prizes, including life membership to Wildlife Whisperer and a nestbox camera system, Ordnance Survey rucksacks and maps plus entry for two to Birdfair and more.

Simon King OBE, President of The Wildlife Trusts, said:

"Everyone can enjoy wildlife, whether they travel to see the Big Five in Africa, go diving off the UK coast or simply watch wild birds in their back garden. And The Wildlife Trusts’ nature reserves have a magic all of their own – unspoilt, truly wild and close to nature. I’d thoroughly recommend coming to Cumbria and exploring places you might never have visited otherwise. You may even catch a glimpse of wildlife you might never have seen.”

An Audience with Simon King OBE – sponsored by Carl Zeiss Ltd and Wildlife Whisperer - takes place at The Rheged Centre, Redhills, Penrith in Cumbria on Sunday 8 May 2011, from 10am to 4.30pm.
