Selwood Living Landscape
of great significance to biodiversity on a European scale
Selwood Living Landscape, in east Somerset, is an exciting new project from Somerset Wildlife Trust to restore, re-create and reconnect wildlife across the area once occupied by one of the major ancient hunting forests of old England.
Each and every part of the Selwood landscape is an important piece of the mosaic through which wildlife needs to travel to thrive and survive in the future.
These landscapes are very rare in mainland Europe so the remnants in the UK are of great significance to biodiversity on a European scale. This area is rich in veteran and ancient trees often found in hedgerows and fields, noteworthy signs of this ancient landscape.
The project will look hard at the historical and ecological landscape to identify the remnants of the past which can be built on for the future.
What’s happening?
The Trust aims to work with the community to put nature at the heart of our lives, restoring and reconnecting the landscape of Selwood - an ancient landscape teeming with wildlife - with a connected patchwork of small hay meadows and pastures, ancient woodland, species-rich hedgerows, ponds and the headwater streams of the rivers Brue and Frome.
