Restoration of a major wetland habitat

Surrey Wildlife Trust

This landscape-scale wetland restoration scheme is creating an important wildlife corridor more than 3 kilometres long.

The scheme area spans the gently undulating Wealden greensand landscape from Redhill to Godstone, south to the Nutfield-Bletchingley ridge, but is halted abruptly in the north by the M25 corridor at the foot of the North Downs.

With a typical lowland agricultural outlook, principally arable and pasture, it is also scarred by an ongoing legacy of aggregate extraction and landfill reflecting the valuable sand deposits lying beneath.

The varied wildlife habitats, generally wetlands and woodlands, scattered across this broad vista amount to no small area, and are yet for the most part adrift in a wider, less-friendly land-use matrix.

What's happening?

New wetland nature reserves have been created by restoring former sand workings at Linden Homes’ Holmethorpe Lagoons and Sibelco UK’s Mercers West Pit.  These new sites have reconnected two important Surrey Wildlife Trust reserves (The Moors and Spines Mere).

The nearby lake at Mercers Country Park is a further waterbody of improving value for wildlife, especially its wintering birds. We aim to further extend the wildlife corridor to meet Trust reserves at Kiln Copse and Bay Pond.

This Living Landscape scheme area is also a Biodiversity Opportunity Area (Holmethorpe to Bay Pond). Surrey Wildlife Trust is currently working with partners in the Surrey Local Nature Partnership to secure long-term recognition for the area in local planning policy.

Focused enhancement of the natural drainage and field boundary network will help to reconnect fragmented habitats.

The exemplary post-minerals habitat creation and restoration projects already in place at the western end of the scheme will be extended.

Start date: 2007
