Marine Data Officer

Salary: £18,000 pro rata

An new part-time, fixed-term position to manage marine data is being recruited for within the Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall & the Isles of Scilly, in conjunction with the marine team at Cornwall Wildlife Trust. The post-holder will manage marine datasets, including the Marine Strandings Network database, develop systems and deliver outputs as appropriate, particularly in relation to Marine Protected Areas work. Experience of working with environmental datasets and databases is required, as well as strong GIS skills.

OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB

The post holder is responsible for the management of the marine datasets owned and managed by ERCCIS. The Officer will be responsible for inputting and digitising data and maintaining marine datasets held by ERCCIS, in particular the Marine Strandings data. The Officer will disseminate marine data outputs as appropriate, particularly in relation to the PANACHE MPA project

The Officer will work within the wider CWT organisation to ensure efficient and effective management, appropriate usage and dissemination of datasets.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

1.  Marine Data Management
• Management of marine datasets owned and managed by ERCCIS.
• Undertake validation and verification of all ERCCIS-owned marine data.
• Digitise data to GIS, including mapping marine habitats and species.
• Contribute to data requirements and outputs of the PANACHE Marine Protected Areas Project.
• Collate marine data from surveys and other projects such as Shoresearch, Seasearch - and other ad hoc surveys and sightings, as well as Marine Strandings data.
• Undertake work to collate and digitise historic marine data.
• Analyse data and produce annual reports and newsletters as appropriate.
• Develop marine data management and accessibility tools such as online data / portals.
• Develop and assist in fundraising for specific marine data projects.

2.   Marine Strandings Network
• Collect and collate strandings records, and input to the strandings database.
• Respond to strandings that require action and inform other members of the team, as appropriate.
• Conduct data analysis to identify trends and significant spatial and temporal events.
• Compile the annual strandings report and provide material for the annual Forum, articles, press releases, scientific papers etc.
• Provide updates and share data with relevant partners.
• Oversee the Hotline online database and support volunteer Strandings Hotline Coordinators.
• Maintain the paper reports, photo CDs/DVDs and archives.
• Assist in managing and training the Marine Strandings Network volunteers.
• Liaise with other members of the marine team to raise awareness of the work of the Marine Strandings Network and the importance of long-term data gathering

3.   General
• Respond to enquiries and represent the Trust on marine data issues as required.
• Ensure website is up to date with marine information and check marine data on the website.

The post is part-time for two years (with the possibility of extension subject to funding), to commence immediately.
