EITHINOG NATURE RESERVE

Eithinog (SH 563713) is an 18 hectare (Ha) wildlife haven and SSSI on the edge of Bangor, Gwynedd, overlooking Menai Bridge. The site supports nationally important grassland fungi within habitats such as unimproved grassland, mature hedgerows and wet woodland. The fields are rich in flora and fauna, with wintering snipe, breeding bullfinch ,foraging bats, over 20 species of butterflies, plants such as the uncommon greater broomrape and a diverse invertebrate population. Features of UK importance and its urban-edge location, give it unique potential to draw in the public. There is a history of community involvement aimed at protecting Eithinog from housing development. In recent times, a variety of well-attended events have been organised through partnerships with Natur Gwynedd, the Wildlife Trust and other groups. Local people have use Eithinog since the 1950s for informal recreation, inspiring many to develop a keen interest in wildlife.
