Location: Monmouth, Gwent
This is a full time, six month volunteer placement with possible opportunity for a subsequent full time paid post. You will assist with the work of the Conservation Officer at the Gwent Wildlife Trust. This role will enable the post holder to gain a variety of environmental conservation skills and valuable work experience, particularly within the area of conservation policy and advocacy. There will be opportunities to attend training courses throughout the year, as well as the opportunity to become involved with other areas of the Trust’s work including assisting with the work of the Reserves and Education Departments.
Main areas of work:
Supporting the Conservation Department with their work which includes:
• Responding to planning applications affecting wildlife and involvement with the Local Development Plan (LDP) process
• Campaigning and advocacy
• Contributing to the work of the Welsh Wildlife Trusts at the national level
• Mapping work and information gathering from MapInfo GIS software
• Assisting with inputting and updating of Local Biodiversity Action Plan (LBAP) information on the Biodiversity Action Reporting System (BARS)
• Representing the Trust at meetings and partnerships
• Working on specific habitats and species projects, such as the Shrill Carder Bee project, including project development
• Working with our consultancy, Gwent Ecology
• Working with volunteers
• Assisting with the organisation of shows and events
• Opportunities to develop your own projects
Training Opportunities:
We aim to offer a broad range of training opportunities and experiences. Depending on individual circumstances, we can offer:
• A free pass for a wide range of training courses, throughout the year including botanical skills, small mammal trapping, dragonflies and damselflies, moths, tree ID, grassland management, fungi and birds.
• One to one training through shadowing experienced ecologists, such as attending meetings and assisting with fieldwork.
• Taster days with other organisations within the environmental sector, such as local authorities, our local records centre and other NGOs.
• Opportunities to assist the Education team - working with the Field teachers at Magor Marsh hosting school groups, helping children of all ages and abilities to learn about the environment including reen dipping, mini beast hunts and bird watching
• Opportunities to assist the Reserves team with work on the nature reserves, including gaining practical experience with work such as fence repairs, scrub clearance, coppicing, gate hanging, dry stone walling and hedge laying.
We will endeavour to tailor training to suit each individual’s abilities and needs.
Location of the Post:
The post will be located at the Gwent Wildlife Trust head office at Seddon House, Dingestow, near Monmouth; however there will a certain amount of travel throughout the Gwent area during the placement.
Skills needed:
• Full UK driving licence
• Good computer and data management skills
• Good interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
• Good organisational skills and time management ability.
• Knowledge and understanding of British wildlife and conservation
Attributes needed:
• Committed to gaining work experience in wildlife conservation with a view to eventually securing a paid position in this field.
• The ability to work well as part of a team, as well as having the initiative and confidence to work alone.
• A mature, professional and flexible approach.
