Orthoptera identification workshop
Full day workshop on identification of orthoptera, led by Gary Farmer.
The Orthoptera (grasshoppers and bushcrickets) are a facinating group of insects which are easily identified in the field. Many species a newcomers to the area and are experiencing a rapid range expansion possibly due to the changing climate. The course will look at the life cycle of the Orthoptera, their songs, habitats and identification.
The first part of the day will be based indoors to set the scene and find out more about how and where to find which species. This will be followed by a visit to local suitable habitats to find and identify species in the field. We will also be listening for the different songs using a bat detector (just like birds the different species of Orthoptera can be identified by their song).
The course is designed to cater for all from the absolute beginner to the more experienced who may wish to improve their identification skills.
It is hoped that the course will encourage people to record this group and contribute to our knowledge of the Orthoptera in the county.
We will discuss how and why it is important to record species and who wants the records.
