Fancy something fresh after work? Come and pull invasive Himalayan balsam plants which are smothering native wildflowers.

Himalayan balsam is a problem because:

  • The plants grow very fast (5ft in a few months) and overwhelm native plants.
  • The pretty pink flowers are so attractive to bees that they pollinate balsam instead of native wild flowers.
  • The shallow balsam roots die over winter leaving river banks prone to washing away.

Young Himalayan balsam plants are easy to pull up by their shallow roots. Plants need to be pulled before they flower and set seed. Once balsam is in flower pulling can make the problem worse by spreading the seed further due to the explosive seed capsule.

Bring gardening gloves or we can provide them. Long trousers and sleeves essential.
