Felt making
Event details
2 June 2013 - 10:00am - 4:00pm
Come along to this fascinating and fun workshop run by a local artist at Lackford Lakes where you will learn how to make handmade felt.
You will discover the ancient art of feltmaking, and learn the techniques and processes involved in wet felting.
Feltmaking is still practised by nomadic peoples in Central Asia and northern parts of East Asia (Mongols), where rugs, tents (yurts) and clothing are regularly made.Felt is a non-woven cloth produced by matting, condensing and pressing woollen fibres. Felt can be of any colour, and made into any shape or size.
You will use merino wool in a wide variety of colours, and will make and use prefelts to create designs and patterns within the felt. Firstly you will make a piece of felt with a simple design in it. You can then experiment with textures and different effects that can be achieved by adding other fibres during the laying out process. By the end of the workshop you will have two pieces of felt to take home with you.
Free tea coffee and biscuits will be available throughout the day.
Please bring :- a packed lunch, paper and pencil, small scissors, and a tea-towel.
There will be a charge of £5 for materials on the day.
