What’s it about?
How much do you actually know about the weird and wonderful small creatures (invertebrates) that live in our waterways?
This workshop is designed to explore the wealth of freshwater invertebrates that live in the Pocklington Canal. We will meet at the lock at Coates Bridge, north of Bielby. Grid ref. SE785452) and collect samples from various habitats within the canal. We will also gather some material to take back and examine later. Depending on the weather we could have lunch on the canal side or back at the Department of Biology, University of York, where we will be spending the afternoon. After lunch and a brief presentation on freshwater invertebrates you will have the opportunity to admire and identify your catches from the morning with the aid of binocular microscopes and keys.
What will I learn?
By the end of the session you should be able to :
- Effectively sample and recognize different freshwater habitats

Venue location
Pocklington Canal, Coates Bridge, north of Bielby. Grid reference - SE785452. Turn off the A1079 to Allerthorpe (the village, NOT Allerthorpe Common). Coming from York, this is on the right just after the Barmby Moor turn. If coming from Hull it’s on the left just after Canal Head. Follow this road through the village for about 2 miles. Just round a corner near a farm there is a narrow road to the left (the FIRST road on the left after leaving the village) signposted 'Bielby'. Drive down the road for about half a mile and you'll see the canal bridge ahead of you. There is parking on the side of the road just before the bridge.
