It’s January and heathland is at its most desolate, but only 200 years ago people lived and worked out on these heaths.

Come and see how your hardy ancestors thrived and made ends meet off this bleak but beautiful land.

Wren’s Nest car park, Wisley Lane, Woking, Surrey. Come off the northbound A3 past RHS Wisley Gardens. Go for half a mile and turn right into the car park under the metal height barrier. Grid Ref: TQ 065 589. Nearest train station: West Byfleet 3 miles, Woking 5 miles. Nearest bus stop: 515 Kingston to Guildford via Surbiton and Wisley. Drops you by footbridge across A3 from Wisley RHS Gardens.
