8 September 2012 - 10:00am - 2:00pm

Event details

8 September 2012 - 10:00am - 2:00pm

Join our Upland Wetland Restoration Project officers at Claife Heights SSSI to experience our rich wetland wildlife in all its splendour!

Valley mires are a nationally rare habitat and a speciality of the Lake District, with floating rafts of Sphagnum mosses. Join us on a walk to discover some of the many small mires and tarns hidden within the forest at Claife Heights, above the eastern shore of Windermere.

These are home to all 3 species of the carnivorous sundew plant, and the rare white-faced darter dragonfly. We will look for dragonflies and wetland plants, as well as walking through ancient oakwoods home to red deer, and enjoying views along Windermere lake.

Meet Cumbria Wildlife Trust ecologists who are helping the Forestry Commission protect these gems for the future, and learn how we can tackle climate change and improve water quality by conserving peat bogs. No previous experience necessary at this event for all ages!

The location is accessible by ferry from the town of Bowness-on-Windermere.

Distance: 6 miles

Difficulty: moderate to strenuous (steep uphill walking through woodland at the start). There are some very steep slopes and rough path surfaces in places on Claife Heights, and also some wet spots and tree roots.
