Juniper Project, guided walk in Central Fells

15 April 2012 - 9:30am - 3:00pm

Event details

15 April 2012 - 9:30am - 3:00pm

This event is part of The Wildlife Trusts' Our Woodland Wildlife events, which are being held all across the UK this weekend.

Cumbria is the best area in the country for juniper, and this walk travels through one of the largest stands in the region. This species has a place in the cultural heritage of the county with previous uses including gunpowder production and the making of illicit liquors. Learn more about juniper, its wildlife, past uses, and why scrub is not a dirty word! We’ll also be on the lookout for a number of migrant birds, fresh from Africa, including willow warbler and redstart.

The walk will leave Grasmere and travel up Easedale Beck before heading up Blindtarn Gill. We will continue to the top of Swinescar Hause before returning via Sourmilk Gill.
