Swanpool recommended MCZ is the only known regional location of a filter feeding bryozoan called the trembling sea mat which is a feature of conservation importance (FOCI) species.
The area is actually a lagoon that has formed behind a bar of sand and shingle on the coast of Falmouth. Fed by two freshwater streams, the lagoon is home to the only naturally occurring population of the trembling sea mat in English waters. This species is extremely vulnerable; any change in the lagoon could threaten its existence here.
This recommended Marine Conservation Zone is ON HOLD at the moment as it was recommended as a Reference Area.
This site was recommended as a Reference Area (a highly protected Marine Conservation Zone). These sites are now on hold as Defra are reviewing their designation. The Wildlife Trusts will be inputting into this review.
