The North of Lundy recommended MCZ represents an area of higher than average species diversity for the South-West.
The area includes a proposed offshore windfarm known as the Atlantic Array.
The seabed consists of sand and coarse sediments, with some areas of rock. The depth of the site is between 35 and 55 metres below sea level, and it lies about 14km away from Morte Point in North Devon.
This area also includes a proposed offshore windfarm known as the Atlantic Array. This co-location of an MCZ and a renewable energy project could provide valuable information about the feasibility of mixing these two uses of the marine environment.
Surveys carried out by the developers, RWE Npower, have already provided new information about the area’s marine habitats and wildlife.
This recommended Marine Conservation Zone is ON HOLD at the moment as Defra has indicated that there is not enough evidence to support designation.
We need you to urge Defra to commit to gathering the additional evidence required to designate this site in a future tranche.
