Discover some of the ocean giants swimming in UK seas

Many people are surprised to discover that you could encounter 29 different species of whale, dolphin, porpoise and the second largest shark in the world – the basking shark - in the waters surrounding our shores

We have identifed 17 megafauna hotspots - places which our ocean giants depend on - and we want to see these special places protected for the dolphins, whales and sharks that need them

Here are the 29 species in full – names that feel mythical, poetic, evocative and often redolent of past eras, stories, scientists, explorers and epic, unknown underwater worlds…

Northern right whale, humpback whale, minke whale, sei whale, fin whale, blue whale, sperm whale, pygmy sperm whale, Cuvier’s beaked whale, northern bottlenose whale, Sowerby's beaked whale, Blainville's beaked whale, True's beaked whale, Gervais' beaked whale, beluga or white whale, narwhal, common bottlenose dolphin, striped dolphin, Fraser’s dolphin, short-beaked common dolphin, white-beaked dolphin, atlantic white-sided dolphin, Risso’s dolphin, melon-headed whale, false killer whale, killer whale, long-finned pilot whale, harbour porpoise, and basking shark.
