The West Berkshire Living Landscape is on the edge of Newbury and Thatcham and includes Greenham Common, Thatcham Reedbeds and BBOWT's Bowdown Woods Nature Reserve.

This mosaic of different habitats is rich with history and wildlife, containing ancient woodland, reedbeds, a variety of watercourses and lowland heathland.  The vision is to protect, expand and enhance this unique and diverse landscape, creating an environment richer in wildlife.

What's happening?

To help wildlife thrive, the West Berkshire Living Landscape is looking for opportunities to link up good wildlife sites, carrying out practical work on sites and working with landowners to encourage sympathetic management.

BBOWT and West Berkshire Council have joined forces in an initiative to:

Expand the wildlife habitats
Create more opportunities for people to enjoy the area
Celebrate this landscape
Protect the area for the enjoyment of future generations

With the help of many volunteers, the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust (BBOWT) has restored 12.7 hectares of heathland at Crookham Common East and Bowdown Woods, and we are aiming to complete restoration of another 2.4 hectares.

Start: date: 2006

Scheme area: 2,600 hectares

Trust reserves within the scheme:

Bowdown Woods, Two Rivers Way

This scheme is helping species including...

Nightjar, bittern, dartford warbler, lapwing, ringed plover, kingfisher, adder, dormouse, purple emperor, bog bush-cricket and white-clawed crayfish.

This scheme is also...

Providing volunteering opportunities – practical conservation work and species surveys; improving access for people and providing health benefits via a series of 6-mile walks
