About the reserve

The reserve is a relict of bog that has been dug for peat and subsequently colonised by birch. Wet plant communities occur including fen-sedge, and the royal fern are still to be seen. The dense cover provides good habitat for some nesting birds including great spotted woodpecker and tawny owl. Birch thinning and clearance has encouraged other birds and a more diverse peatland flora. This area is also frequently used by basking grass snakes.
