Marine Protection in Alderney

Alderney - Marine Protection

As part of the Channel Islands, Alderney is outside of the European Union and cannot designate European Marine Sites. There is, however, an internationally important wetland Ramsar Site in place to protect breeding seabirds: Alderney's west coast and the Burhou Islands. The Ramsar Site was officially recognised by the United Nations in 2005 for having over 8,000 breeding pairs of gannets.

The island also hosts a number of local nature reserves designated by the States of Alderney, including the Longis Reserve which sustains important marine habitats such as eelgrass beds, rocky-shores and reefs. Both the Ramsar Site and local reserves are managed by the Alderney Wildlife Trust with the States of Alderney.
