Achieving net gain for biodiversity from rail infrastructure projects
We want all infrastructure development to contribute positively to nature’s recovery. There are over 10,000 miles of railway in the U.K. and the relatively undisturbed tracksides can be great places for nature with the potential to provide corridors for wildlife to move from one area to another.
As part of the electrification of the Great Western route, Network Rail committed to ensuring new natural places were created to replace those lost during work on the ground. Through our partnership with Network Rail we are working to identify suitable local projects where new wildlife habitat should be created.
We have worked with Network Rail, through our established grants making function, to ensure the company’s substantial investment is properly deployed to achieve its purpose.
