National Week for Wildlife gets even bigger in Scotland

31st May, 2006

Now in its fourth year, Scotland’s National Week for Wildlife is even bigger in 2006 with over
160 events organised by the Scottish Wildlife Trust (SWT) from 3 to 11 June 2006.

In Scotland, Wildlife Week 2006 promises to deliver some fun, interesting and informative activities, talks, walks and guided tours on land and on sea. From the weird and the wonderful, the cute and the scary, to the large and the small, this is a chance to get out and discover some of the amazing creatures and features to be found in Scotland.

As Stuart Glen (Wildlife Week Co-ordinator) said, the aim of Wildlife Week is to get people to enjoy wildlife first-hand: “This programme is designed to motivate people to explore what’s outside and discover wildlife on their doorstep. You don’t have to be an expert, or even live in a rural area – you just have to look in the right places. By joining an organisation like SWT or participating in Wildlife Week, we can help by giving you access to the knowledge, information and people to get the most our of your wildlife experience.”

With a quarter of all UK visitors to Scotland expecting to enjoy a wildlife-related activity as part of their wider holiday experience, for the second year running SWT is working with
VisitScotland to promote the events programme. As VisitScotland’s Wildlife Product Manager
Lorna Bruce said: “Scotland has an amazing diversity of wildlife which is so readily accessible across the whole of the country. We are delighted to be involved in Wildlife Week because events like this help to raise the awareness of Scotland as a destination for this type of activity. It highlights to visitors’ just how close the wildlife is and also encourages them to explore different areas of Scotland, to see and learn about the amazing array of species that this country has to offer.”

Wildlife Week is part of a UK-wide initiative by wildlife trusts all around the country to get people involved in the natural heritage around them. With so many events to choose from, there is something for all ages and all interests. On 3 June, budding artists can join Forestry
Commission staff to create natural art on Rascarrel beach in Dumfries. If this doesn’t float your boat, then head to sea in search of dolphins in the Moray Firth with Ecoventures departing daily. If you prefer dry land then look to the skies for a glimpse of the magnificent sea eagles on the Isle of Mull or the awesome ospreys at Loch of the Lowes. It’s also a great time to join SWT as there are some great admission offers for entry to some top attractions during the week-long programme.
