Indian bean tree

Catalpa bignonioides

Height 10-15 m, bole up to 1.1 m diameter. Deciduous. Bark is smooth, pink and brown in young trees, becoming grey and scaly with plates. The leaves are egg-shaped, with a slender, ponted tip, 12-25 x 10-18 cm.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Native to southern states of North America. Widely grown as an ornamental tree. Woodland edges.

What are its young like?

Flowers are showy, with tube-shaped white petals with red and purple inner markings, in panicles of 20-30 cm. The fruit, containing many winged seeds, is a purple pod, 15-40 cm.
