Field maple

Acer campestris

Height 10-12 m, occasionally to 28 m. Deciduous. Has rounded dome and grey-brown scaly bark that darkens in old trees. Leaves have five lobes, 7 x 7 cm, may be pink or purplish when new, turning yellow in autumn. Produces good quality timber.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Central to southern Europe, including England and Wales. Deciduous, broadleaf woodlands. Hedgerows. Will grow in sandy, chalk or clay soils.

What are its young like?

Flowers are not very obvious but appear after leaves. The fruit is flat on a pair of wings, 2.5-5 cm.
