Dogwood

Cornus sanguinea

Height 6 m, bole to 20 cm diameter. Crown is rounded. Bark is brown. The oval leaves are dark green, 4-8 x 2-4 cm. Autumn colour is red or purple. The blood-red shoots give this species its latin name "sanguinea".

What habitats does it normally live in?

Southern Scandinavia, Britain, Portugal, across Europe to Turkey. Understorey in woodlands.

What are its young like?

Fragrant, dull white flowers appear in June. Fruit is globe-shaped, turning from green to almost black, 6-8 mm, with a single seed.
