Judas Tree

Cereis siliquastrum

Height 10-15m, bole up to 60cm diameter. Deciduous. Branches are spreading. bark grey-brown, smooth or folded, becoming cracked. Leaves are alternate, with heart shaped base in two rows 8-12cm wavy untoothed margin.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Native to Mediterranean and southern Europe to western Asia. Planted as ornamental, Hillsides in dry open areas.

What are its young like?

Flowers on short stalks, singly or in cluster, in May before or with leaves. Flat pods ripen to purple in autumn and remain on tree until well into winter, 10cm.
