Bird cherry
Prunus padus
Height 10-20m; bole up to 80cm diameter. Young trees have cone-shaped crown, which tends to become domed. Branches droop. Bark is smooth, grey-brown. Leaves are elliptic or egg shaped, wider towards the tip, margin serrated, 7-13 x 4-7cm. Dark green, turning yellow and red in autumn.
What habitats does it normally live in?
North Europe to north Asia. Absent in Mediterranean. Temperate woodlands, preferring lime soils.
How does it reproduce or breed?
Flowers in late spring, on side shoots. Flowers are white, produced on drooping racemes. Fruit is black, globe-shaped up to 8mm.
