Almond

Prunus dulcis

Height 10m; bole up to 30cm diameter. Deciduous tree with a broad crown. Smooth bark, growing fissured, dark brown. Leaves are lance-shaped with a pointed tip, dark to yellow-green 4-12 x 1.2-3cm

What habitats does it normally live in?

South west Europe and North Africa. Prefers dry hillsides. It is widely cultivated for nuts and ornamental.

What are its young like?

Flowers in late winter or early spring, on last year's growth. Large, showy bright pink or pinkish white flowers, 2.5-5cm. Fruit is egg shaped with a green fleshy rather felt-like skin that splits to reveal the nut, 3.5-6cm
