Also known as may or quickthorn. Height 10-16m, bole up to 1m diameter. Deciduous. Crown is rounded. Branches are dense, twigs bear sharp thorns. Leaves have two or three pairs of lobes, 1.5-5x2-5cm, shiny green turning yellow or red in autumn. Supports many insects.
What habitats does it normally live in?
Widespread throughout all of Europe. Widely used as a hedging shrub. Also as a standard in woodlands.
What are its young like?
Flowers in May, in clusters of creamy-white flowers. Fruit is small dark red berry, 8-14mm, each containing one seed. Valuable food for birds, especially for thrush family.
