Grey poplar

Populus x canescens

Height 25-40 m. Bole up to 2 m diameter. Deciduous. Crown is columnar, and open. Young bark is pale, whitish; lower trunk is black. Leaves are placed, alternatively and vary considerably in shape, white underside. Suckers readily from roots.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Central Europe. Damp ground, near rivers and in water meadows.

What are its young like?

Male catkins are green; female catkins have a golden tinge. They grow on separate trees.
