Himalayan birch

Betula birch

Height 10-20 m, bole up to 60 cm diameter. Deciduous. Bark is red-brown and white. Pendulous branches forming a pointed crown when young, domed when mature, Leaves are egg-shaped, tapered, singly or in paris on spur shoots, alternate onlong shoots, toothed, 3-10 x 2-8 cm.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Himalayas to Tibet and west China. Widespread as ornamental.

What are its young like?

Male and female flowers on separate catkins on same tree in spring. Male catkins yellow and pendulous, female catkins erect. Fruiting catkins release winged seeds.
