Grey alder
Alnus incana
Height 20 m, bole up to 60 cm diameter. Deciduous. Smooth, grey-green bark, distinct pores. Leaves are alternate, pointed, elliptic, 5-10 x 4-6 cm. Upper surface is dull green, lower surface bluish-green and hairy.
What habitats does it normally live in?
Northern and central Europe. Mountain valleys and sub-Arctic forests.
What are its young like?
Separate male and female catkins on the same tree. Male catkins are short, egg-shaped, turning to green fruit, 1.5 cm long, remains on tree all winter, maturing in autumn.
