London plane

Platanus x hispanica

Height 20-40 m, bole up to 2 m diameter. Hardy natural hybrid. Deciduous. Domed crown with thick twisting branches. Bark is dark and flakes in autumn, showing creamy patches. Leves alternate with five lobes, 20 x 23 cm.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Origin unknown but probably noted in continental Europe. Widespread as an ornamental tree, often linng town avenues dur to its tolerance of pollution.

What are its young like?

Female flowers are reddish, appearing at the shoot tips. Male flowers are yellow situated farther back on stem. The bobble-like fruits remain on the tree during winter.
