Maidenhair tree

Gingko biloba

Height 15-25 m, bole up to 1.2 m diameter. Deciduous. Long-lived. Crown is columnar for many years, before spreading and open. Leaves are fan-shaped, two-lobed, 5-7 x 5-7 cm.

What habitats does it normally live in?

Native to eastern China, grown widely for its seeds in eastern Asia. Widespread in gardens as ornamental and in towns as amenity tree.

What are its young like?

Male and female flowers grow on separate trees. Male has small green-yellow catkins, 6-8 cm. Female flowers are small, stalked, round and knob-like. Fruit resembles a green plum, 2.5-4 cm, with a white edible seed.
